The RCA (Rail Corrugation Analyser) was initially developed as a grinder-based instrument that measured corrugation with sufficient accuracy to approve grinding work and to determine whether rail should be ground. Both a grinder-based instrument and a small self-contained measuring bogie are now available. The measuring bogie is usually attached to a vehicle but could also be pushed by hand (two people are required to lift the instrument). Measurement with either version of the instrument is typically made at up to about 10km/h. Measurement at higher speeds is possible with reduced accuracy. RCAs are available to measure Vignole and grooved rails, and track of different gauge.
