RailMeasurement’s CAT and bi-CAT are instruments to measure rail corrugation and acoustic roughness at a comfortable walking speed of 3-4km/h (1m/s).

The CAT measures one rail at a time: typically a user would measure one rail then back along the opposite rail, ending up at the starting point. The bi-CAT has been developed to use the same technology as the CAT but measure both rails simultaneously. The bi-CAT software displays analysed results for both rails simultaneously.

Both CAT and bi-CAT can readily be transported to site by a single person or as checked-in baggage on a flight. The CAT packs into a suitcase-sized wheeled instrument case with a total weight, including equipment, of 18kg. The bi-CAT packs into the same size of plastic instrument case as a CAT, but has an additional plastic box that contains the framework. On site, the equipment can be taken out of the carrying case, assembled and be ready for collecting measurements in a few minutes. Only one person is required to carry, assemble and operate either the CAT or the bi-CAT.
Both types of equipment can be used on flat-bottomed (Vignole), embedded or grooved rails.

The CAT in particular has been widely used for over two decades in the following areas:
  • rail reprofiling
  • corrugation surveys
  • measurement of acoustic roughness
  • research and development e.g. corrugation, products for corrugation mitigation, effects of different trackform and wheel/rail noise
We regard validation of the equipment as being of fundamental importance. In the 1990s we developed possibly the first traceable and objective validation procedure, which can be used for any instrument of this type. We have participated in drafting Standards for the use of equipment of this type and in independent testing of equipment. Our equipment is widely used, and possibly the most widely used, by independent organisations such as universities and consultancies for measurement of rail corrugation and acoustic roughness. The software includes the relevant processing specified in all of the Standards of which we are aware, including EN15610, EN ISO 3095 and EN 13231-3. We show one-third octave spectra up to wavelengths of 5m as several users have demonstrated that the CAT can give reliable measurements of relatively long wavelength irregularities. These long waves are particularly important for railways that are concerned about ground-borne noise and vibration. CAT measurements have been used in the last few years to provide Crossrail with long wave measurements of its track.

The vast majority of measurements of rail corrugation and acoustic roughness that appear in the peer-reviewed scientific literature have been made using CATs. This approval by independent organisations is a very convincing demonstration that our equipment provides reliable measurements.

The bi-CAT uses the same technology as the CAT and the equipment has the same accuracy and repeatability. It was developed for several clients whose preference was to measure both rails simultaneously rather than go up one rail and back on the other. It is accordingly an excellent instrument for providing accurate, rapid and reliable surveys of irregularities on a railway. The software includes analysis that can be used to highlight and tabulate areas in which reprofiling is recommended according to stated criteria.
