COVID-19 has changed the world of public transport. The demand for physical distance from both passengers and personnel is more important than ever. One proven means is using a passenger guidance system to get passengers to free spaces.

Guidance of passengers in Public Transport becomes more and more important. Not only in extraordinary times like now, where informing passengers about the occupancy rate is even more important to keep distance. Informing passenger about the occupancy rate of the vehicle can classified in three steps. The passenger needs to be informed about the expected occupancy rate of a trip at an early stage of his or her journey. This information is provided by the planning system and the statistic system. In a next step, the passenger wants be informed about the real occupancy rate of the vehicle when arriving at the bus station. Intelligent systems need to provide real time data in combination with plan data to inform passengers correctly. The third step is to include the typical alighting behavior and artificial intelligent to provide most accurate information. In metro systems, where the headway of trains is at a maximum already, an intelligent guidance of passengers at the platform edge via light symbols can increase the vehicle occupancy.
Guidance of passengers does not only lead to more comfort and safety for the passengers, but can also increase the revenue for Public Transport Operators.
