Product description

The wheelrail contact plays a key role in the vehicle dynamics from the point of view of aspects as rolling safety, safety against derailment, ride quality, track fatigue, wheel and rail wear, etc. It is because of this that the exact and reliable measurement of vertical and lateral contact forces is very important.

Based on a measuring method and algorithm developed by CETEST during years of investigation, CETEST measuring wheelset measures the main contact parameters: the lateral and vertical forces. Other parameters as the distance between contact points can be obtained.

The wheel web is instrumented with strain gauge full bridges. The forces create strains that are sensed by the gauges. The signals are amplified and transmitted to the interior of the car by the telemetry system. The wheelrail forces are then deducted by a complex algorithm. The forces are measured with a precision of +/1%

There is no need to manufacture any special wheel for the application. The measuring method is independent of the wheel shape.

The measuring wheelset can be used for the following applications:

  • Assessment of the safety against derailment and the running behavior of the vehicle according to EN14363 or UIC518 standards.
  • Track quality measuring system based on wheelrail forces.
  • Wheel wear investigation.
  • Troubleshooting.
  • Validation of theoretical models.

The wheelset has been successfully used in the complete range of railway vehicles: high speed trains, trams, metros, locomotives, freight cars and regional vehicles. For the case of high speed vehicles, locomotives, freight cars and regional vehicles the complete method of the EN14363 standard has been successfully completed.
