Heidenheim, Germany. Thanks to an efficient exhaust aftertreatment system, the new diesel engine from Voith meets the most strict exhaust standards for rail vehicles and is thus the most advanced of its type in the range of horizontal engines. At the same time, the unit, which builds on existing robust construction machinery engines, has up to 23 percent more power than comparable drive systems. Long service intervals also reduce the life cycle costs for the engine, which was developed by the te…

Salzgitter/Olten. Screw couplers with drawhooks and side buffers – the same types of couplers as those used 150 years ago are still being used in European rail freight service. Every car must be coupled and uncoupled by hand. Each coupling operation takes 30 seconds, not including the time spent walking along the cars. Compounding this, there will be fewer workers in the future for the classification yards because of the harsh working conditions and demography. In this respect, automatic coupler…

  • Voith Electric Drive System

The main components of the system are the electric motor, the inverter and the battery. The battery installed in the vehicle is charged overnight in the depot using green electricity from the public electrical power system. This is sufficient enough to cover the entire daily route of a city bus line without having to recharge. When the brake is operated, a large amount of the applied braking energy is recovered and fed back into the battery.
